What Are Tooth-Colored Fillings?
Tooth-colored fillings, also known as composite fillings or white fillings, are a type of dental restoration used to repair teeth that have been damaged by decay or trauma. Unlike traditional silver amalgam fillings, which are noticeable due to their metallic appearance, tooth-colored fillings are made from a composite resin material that closely matches the color of natural teeth.
These fillings are highly versatile and can be used to restore both front and back teeth. They are bonded directly to the tooth surface, which helps to strengthen the tooth and provide additional support. Additionally, tooth-colored fillings require less removal of healthy tooth structure compared to amalgam fillings, making them a more conservative option.
One of the main benefits of tooth-colored fillings is their aesthetic appeal. Because they can be customized to match the shade of the surrounding teeth, they blend in seamlessly with the natural smile, making them virtually indistinguishable. This makes tooth-colored fillings particularly popular for visible areas of the mouth, where appearance is important.
Overall, tooth-colored fillings offer a durable, natural-looking solution for restoring the health, function, and appearance of damaged teeth.
How Do Tooth-Colored Fillings Work?
Tooth-colored fillings, also known as composite fillings, work by bonding a durable resin material directly to the tooth surface to repair areas damaged by decay or trauma. Here's how the process typically works:
-
Preparation: The dentist begins by numbing the area around the affected tooth to ensure a comfortable experience. Then, any decay or damaged tooth structure is removed using specialized dental instruments.
-
Etching: Next, the dentist applies a mild acid solution to the prepared tooth surface. This etches the enamel and creates a rough surface for the filling material to adhere to more effectively.
-
Bonding: After the tooth is etched, a bonding agent is applied to the prepared tooth surface. This bonding agent helps the composite resin material adhere securely to the tooth.
-
Placement: The tooth-colored composite resin material is carefully applied in layers to the prepared tooth. Each layer is shaped and sculpted to restore the natural contours of the tooth and ensure a proper fit.
-
Curing: Once the filling material is in place, a special curing light is used to harden and bond the resin to the tooth. This process typically takes only a few seconds per layer.
-
Finishing: After the filling has been cured, the dentist will trim and shape it further to achieve the desired contour and ensure a comfortable bite. The filling is then polished to blend seamlessly with the natural tooth surface.
The result is a strong, durable restoration that matches the color and appearance of the surrounding teeth, providing a natural-looking solution for repairing dental cavities and restoring the health and function of the tooth.

Aesthetic Dentistry Associates Reviews
Went in for a routine cleaning and to get a treatment plan for a couple crowns and fillings that had fallen out. Hygienist was very nice and personable. It's always a little nerve-wracking going in knowing you need some big work done and she made my feel very comfortable. After my cleaning I met with Dr. Malik who reviewed my x-rays and developed the treatment plan to get everything corrected. I do have Delta Dental which they do accept and helps with the cost, but I was still surprised how affordable this plan is. I've paid $1500 for a single crown before and they quoted me ~$1500 total for 3 crowns and 6 fillings. This place is definitely a big win for me. Highly recommend and will post another review after the work is done.
